Grinzinger Star will chase a third consecutive South Australian country feature in Saturday’s $14,900 Quorn Cup (1900m)
The Kylie McKerlie and Waylon Hornhardt-trained galloper will carry 62.5kg in the feature after the claim for Alan Lai following his Port Augusta and Roxby Downs Cup victories and has proven an astute purchase.
Having claimed the scalp of subsequent Queensland Derby (and Toorak winner later in his career) Mr Quickie during his three-year-old season, Grinzinger Star found his way to Murray Bridge trainer Karen Byrnes.
After going unplaced in his first nine SA starts he was picked-up for $18,000 through a 2021 Inglis Online Auction.
Since heading north, Grinzinger Star has won 10 races (with six placings) from his 32 starts and has six country cup features on his resume, providing some great opportunities for the next generation of SA’s riding talent.
Alana Livesey was aboard when he won the 2021 Quorn Cup, Angus Chung was in the saddle for his 2022 Kimba Cup win.
Lachlan Overall enjoyed a great run with the horse winning the 2022 Streaky Bay, Hawker and Port Augusta features while Alan Lai will chase his third win in succession in partnership with the horse from barrier five on the weekend.
