2023 Mount Gambier Gold Cup

After trialling December Cup meetings in previous years, the Mount Gambier Racing Club have decided on a return to Autumn racing for their 2023 Gold Cup, being held on March 31st.

“We recently undertook a survey of various stakeholders involved with the Gold Cup event and the feedback was workshopped by the committee to ascertain the most suitable time of year for the event,” Mount Gambier Racing Club General Manager Brett Watson said.

“While we’ve trialled the twilight format in December, we somewhat surprisingly didn’t see a huge improvement with the weather and crowd numbers were on par or lower than the events we’ve held in the cooler months pre-COVID,” Mr Watson said.

“In light of that, we wanted to provide our members, sponsors and others involved an opportunity to provide their input to establish the best way forward for the event and provide some certainty around the timing of our major event for future years.”

Following a successful Gold Cup event in April (2022), despite COVID-19 related crowd restrictions, the Mount Gambier Racing Club committee approached Racing SA to secure an Autumn Gold Cup date.

“Once the committee worked through the feedback, we worked collaboratively with Racing SA to mutually determine where the event fits on the South Australian racing calendar, and we are really pleased they have supported our proposal for the benefit of all parties,” Mr Watson said.

The scheduling of the event was also endorsed by the major event sponsor, The Scott Group of Companies.

“We’ve listened to the feedback of our members and sponsors and we are relieved to provide certainty around the timing of our major social and racing event on the calendar,” Mount Gambier Racing Club President Peter George said.

“Mount Gambier Racing Club is incredibly grateful to have the continued support of The Scott Group of Companies, along with Carlton United Breweries and our other partners, particularly through the challenges we’ve experienced in recent years,” Mr George added.

Echoing the thoughts of Mr George and Mr Watson, Country Racing SA CEO, Chris Biggs is looking forward to the return of Autumn racing.

"It is great to see a return to autumn racing for the Mount Gambier Gold Cup and we look forward to the success of their key race meeting," he said.
